After completing his university degree in international business at different universities across Europe and the U.S., Wolfgang Ufer began his career in 1999 by joining the newly established eBusiness of Mercedes-Benz. In his following role as Head of Business Development Centers (BDC) & Lead Management, he was responsible for the development and rollout of BDC in numerous European dealerships. In 2009, he took over a new challenge as a board member for Marketing, Product Management & Business Development at Mercedes-Benz Luxembourg, successfully repositioning Mercedes-Benz in the Luxembourg market.

Wolfgang returned to Stuttgart in 2013, taking over as Head of smart Cities. Over the next five years he steered and developed more than 40 strategically selected cities in China, NAFTA and Europe, increasing smart sales in the metropolises where the car could fulfill its true potential. Following the foundation of the new joint venture, Wolfgang joined the smart transformation project in 2018 to set up a new smart organization and develop a future-proof business model for the brand. Since January 2021, he has led smart Germany, where he played a key role in the successful market introduction of the all-electric product portfolio. Under his leadership, smart #1, smart #3 and smart #5 were successfully launched in Germany, with the smart #5 achieving particularly strong momentum in 2025.

Since March 2026, Wolfgang takes responsibility as CEO of smart Europe.
