As smart approaches the highly anticipated European launch of the smart #5, the vehicle has recently completed rigorous winter testing in Northern Europe. Covering more than 3,000 kilometers from Mora, Sweden, to Karasjok, Norway, and Rovaniemi, Finland, the smart Europe R&D team, together with their colleagues from smart in China, put three prototypes of the latest all-electric vehicle through their paces in some of the harshest weather conditions Europe has to offer.
The goal was simple, yet essential: to ensure that the smart #5 is fully prepared for the daily use of European customers in any case. As part of this process, three key aspects of the vehicle were tested:
1. Driving performance: The first major focus was on the vehicle’s handling on icy and snowy roads. Even in its rear-wheel drive variant, the smart #5 impressed the team with its stability and ease of handling on slippery surfaces. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) combined with precise steering enhanced the driving experience both in terms of safety and maneuverability.
2. Comfort systems: Passenger comfort is crucial, especially in freezing temperatures. The smart #5 was subjected to extensive testing focusing on heating, ventilation, de-icing and defogging capabilities. Despite being exposed to temperatures as low as -26°C, the heating system of the smart #5 excelled, ensuring a comfortable cabin environment. The ventilation and de-icing systems also performed well, quickly clearing the windows and maintaining visibility throughout the journey.
3. Charging capabilities: One of the highlights of the test was evaluating the battery performance of the smart #5 in sub-zero temperatures. As expected in extreme conditions, power consumption increased. The 800V battery setup technology combined with the pre-conditioning system enabled efficient charging even in the bitter cold. Pre-conditioning the battery prior to charging was key to ensuring an efficient and smooth charging process, even in remote locations.
The smart Europe R&D winter test proved that the smart #5 is ready for any driving situation. Its handling in demanding road conditions, its fast and efficient charging performance and its ability to carry passengers comfortably at all times show that the latest model of the all-electric brand meets the needs of European customers. Looking ahead to the European market launch, Dr. Tilo Schweers, Vice President R&D smart Europe, shared his thoughts on the successful test:
