At an exclusive Tech Workshop set within an immersive “smart City” in Beijing, smart presented an in-depth look at the advanced engineering and technology behind the upcoming smart #2. The all-new model marks smart’s return to the segment it defined, demonstrating how an ultra-compact footprint can bring together intelligent use of space, uncompromising safety and effortless urban agility for modern city life.

Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) – The Technical Foundation of the smart #2

At the heart of the smart #2 is the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), a purpose-built all-electric architecture developed specifically for smart’s ultra-compact two-seater by the smart International Global Engineering Team.

Creating an all-electric vehicle within a body measuring less than 3 metres presents a unique engineering challenge. ECA has been developed to bring together generous cabin space, an advanced electric powertrain, robust safety structures and agile driving dynamics within exceptionally compact exterior dimensions.

Despite its ultra-compact footprint, the proprietary ECA platform accommodates a 35.8 kWh battery using CATL cells, targeting approximately 300 km of range according to WLTP and supporting DC fast charging from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes.

The ECA also incorporates a highly integrated 11-in-1 electric drive, integrating multiple electric-drive, power-electronics and control functions within a compact unit. This high level of integration reduces packaging complexity and supports the efficient use of space required by the smart #2’s ultra-compact footprint.

Tridion Cell Evo – No Compromise on Safety

Safety remains a core priority of the smart #2, irrespective of its compact dimensions. The new-generation Tridion Cell Evo further develops one of the most recognisable elements of smart’s safety philosophy for a new electric era.

More than 78% of the body structure is constructed from high-strength steel, complemented by a 3-layer steel configuration and materials with tensile strength of up to 1,800 MPa.

With torsional stiffness of 39,000 Nm/deg, the structure has been engineered for exceptional rigidity and is capable of withstanding a roof load of more than 4 tonnes, combining compact exterior dimensions with high levels of protection, stability and driver confidence.

Occupant protection is further supported by 7 airbags and an advanced seatbelt system combining Pyrotechnic Lap Pretension (PLP) and Crash Locking Tongue (CLT) technology, helping to enhance restraint of the pelvis and lower limbs and reduce forward occupant movement in the event of a collision.

The battery system is protected by a layered structural design, further supporting the smart #2’s safety concept.

Beyond passive protection, the smart #2 has also undergone extensive vehicle-dynamics and stability validation. In the Moose Test, the smart #2 achieved 78 km/h, while a static rollover angle of 45.9° further demonstrates the vehicle’s high level of stability.

Effortless Urban Dynamics – Unmatched Urban Agility

The same engineering focus on stability and control supports one of the defining characteristics of the smart #2: effortless urban agility.

Designed to navigate modern urban environments with ease, the smart #2 combines its ultra-compact dimensions with unmatched manoeuvrability.

With a curb-to-curb turning diameter of just 6.95 metres, the smart #2 is engineered for effortless navigation through narrow streets, confined parking spaces and the tightest urban environments.

The smart #2 is the only vehicle in the sub-3-metre segment to feature a rear five-link independent suspension. Together with its rear-wheel-drive layout and 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, the suspension contributes to responsive, stable and agile handling.

Across the full line-up, the smart #2 is equipped as standard with tyres in a staggered-width configuration, with narrower front tyres and wider rear tyres. The setup supports precise steering and effortless urban agility at the front, while enhancing grip and stability at the rear.

Iconic Design Meets Advanced Engineering

Styled by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, the smart #2 embraces the signature ‘wheels-at-the-corners’ setup that has defined smart’s two-seater from the very beginning. Short overhangs and an ultra-compact footprint maximise the space within the cabin while contributing to the effortless urban agility and unmistakable smart character of the smart #2.

Advanced engineering and iconic design come together in the smart #2 to embody the brand’s core D.N.A.: Designed with Love, No Compromise on Safety, and Amazing Drives.

The smart #2 is now on the road to Paris. Following its exclusive Tech Workshop preview in Beijing, the reinvented urban icon will make its highly anticipated World Premiere at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October, where the fully realised production model will be officially unveiled to the world.
