(October 12, 2026, Hangzhou, China) – smart today celebrated the World Premiere of the all-electric smart #2¹ at the Paris Motor Show, marking the return of its iconic two-seater for a new electric era.
Thirty years ago, in 1996, the smart vehicle was presented as an art object beneath the Louvre Pyramid — an unconventional expression of an equally unconventional idea. Today, smart returns to Paris with the fully realised production smart #2.
The smart #2 is more than the return of a familiar silhouette; it is a strategic addition to the smart portfolio and a demonstration of what our teams can achieve in the most demanding urban segment. Developing an ultra-compact electric vehicle requires exceptional discipline in packaging, engineering and safety. With the smart #2, we have brought those capabilities together in a product that is unmistakably smart. Its World Premiere in Paris, followed by launches in Europe and China, opens an important new chapter for our global product family.Mr. Tong Xiangbei, Global CEO of smart
Paris has a special place in smart’s story, so bringing the smart #2 here is particularly meaningful. This car expresses our core D.N.A. in a very pure way: Designed with Love, No Compromise on Safety, and Amazing Drives. From its unmistakable proportions to the details shaped by Love, Pure, Unexpected, the smart #2 takes the character people remember and gives it a fresh, contemporary expression. It is small in footprint, but big in personality — exactly the kind of unexpected idea that has always made smart different.Mr. Kang Yi, Global CMO of smart
Styled by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, the smart #2 translates the unmistakable character of smart’s iconic two-seater into a contemporary new form, guided by smart’s overarching design philosophy of Love, Pure, Unexpected.
Full, generous volumes and softly sculpted surfaces give the smart #2 a friendly and approachable character, while clean proportions, short overhangs and its signature wheels-at-the-corners stance preserve the pure smart silhouette and maximise space. Unexpected details, including logo-inspired lighting and a contemporary interpretation of the iconic floating roof, reinterpret familiar smart cues for a new generation.
Inside, a continuous bench-style seating arrangement and S-shaped cockpit make efficient use of the compact cabin, while carefully considered colours, materials and distinctive details bring warmth and individuality.
Subtle water-ripple motifs add a distinctive detail to the interior, while the two-piece Split Tailgate adds everyday functionality: the upper glass section can be opened independently in confined spaces, while the lower section folds down to create a practical loading platform and can also be used as a seat when parked, supporting up to 120 kg.
As a surprise highlight of the World Premiere, smart also unveiled the exclusive smart #2 Couture Edition.
Building on the fashion-inspired direction first previewed by smart Concept #2, the Couture Edition carries the established “Function becomes Fashion” theme from concept to production.
Limited to 999 units in Europe and 999 units in China, the Couture Edition combines an Atelier White Matte exterior finish with a contrasting Platinum Gold roof, distinctive gold detailing and exclusive 16-inch Lyra rims. A numbered interior badge further underlines its limited-edition character.
For Europe, the Couture Edition comes with the full Premium specification as standard, including a glass roof, ambient lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, a 7-speaker Sennheiser Sound System, wireless charging and navigation, combined with a look and feel entirely its own.
Underpinning the smart #2 is the newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform, engineered specifically for smart’s ultra-compact all-electric two-seater.
Measuring 2,746 mm in length², the smart #2 maximises usable space within its ultra-compact footprint. The ECA platform brings together intelligent packaging, a floor-mounted high-voltage battery, rear-wheel drive and advanced chassis technology.
Power comes from a rear-mounted 60 kW electric motor delivering 130 Nm of torque to the rear wheels. Wider tyres at the rear than at the front further support stability and driving dynamics.
For Europe, the smart #2 features a 35.8 kWh LFP battery, with a target combined WLTP range of 290 km³. Supporting 65 kW DC fast charging, the smart #2 can charge from 10% to 80% state of charge within 20 minutes, while AC charging at up to 11 kW supports convenient everyday charging⁴.
Urban agility is equally central to the package. A curb-to-curb turning circle of just 6.95 metres makes navigating tight city streets and narrow parking spaces effortless.
The smart #2 also features a five-link rear suspension, a first in its class, supporting confident and composed driving both in urban environments and on the highway.
At the heart of the smart #2 body structure is the Tridion Cell Evo, the next generation of the safety cell that has characterised smart since its first model. It creates a robust protective structure around the passenger cabin without compromising the vehicle’s compact dimensions.
Beyond structural safety, the smart #2 comes equipped with driver-assistance technologies including smart Pilot Assist5 and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go and Highway Assist.
Following its World Premiere in Paris, early ordering for the smart #2 will begin in Europe and China, bringing smart’s iconic two-seater to two of the brand’s key markets.
For Europe, the smart #2 will initially be offered in three core trim lines — Pure, Pure+ and Premium — alongside the limited Couture Edition.
Market-specific line-ups, pricing, specifications, equipment and availability will be communicated locally.
Technical specifications, equipment, functions, range, charging performance and availability may vary by market. Figures and specifications referenced in footnotes 2–5 relate to the European-market smart #2 and remain subject to final homologation. Specifications for China will be communicated locally.
1 Note on the smart #2’s vehicle status: The vehicle is currently still undergoing the homologation process (type approval process). The technical specifications, equipment features, and functions listed are based on the current state of development and are subject to change during the homologation process. Delivery will take place once homologation is complete. Upon delivery, the vehicle will correspond to the production specification confirmed by homologation.
2 This applies to the smart #2 Pure, smart #2 Pure+, and smart #2 Premium models. The smart #2 Couture Edition is 2,764 mm long.
3 Energy consumption combined in kWh/100 km (WLTP): 13.6 (Pure / Pure+ / Premium / Couture Edition); CO₂ emissions combined (while the car is in operation) in g/km: 0; CO₂ class: A; electric range (WLTP) in km: 290 (Pure / Pure+ / Premium / Couture Edition). These are preliminary details. The vehicle is currently undergoing the EU homologation process. These details are subject to final homologation. Changes are therefore possible. Once the EU homologation process is complete, smart will publish the official figures through the usual channels.
4 The charging time of the battery may vary depending on various conditions such as different ambient and battery temperatures, available power and other restrictions (e.g. local legal regulations, technical standards, unbalanced load limits), as well as the use of the remote control function (e.g. remote controlled air conditioning, preheating of the vehicle, etc.). With a 3-phase power supply, you can charge at up to 11 kW and go from 10% to 80% SOC (State of Charge) in just 3 hours under optimal conditions (except with the for smart #2 Pure, which is are only available with 7.4 kW a single-phase onboard charger that technically allows for a maximum charging power of 7.4 kW and requires 5 hours to do so). With a DC fast charging station, the smart #2 supports 65 kW DC fast charging and can go from 10% to 80% SOC in 20 minutes under optimal conditions.
