January 22, 2024, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany. The smart #1 has claimed the title of best Small Electric SUV at the prestigious 2024 What Car? Awards. The recognition is the latest in a series of accolades for the all-electric SUV since its launch, including receiving a coveted five-star rating from What Car?'s expert reviewers.

A second What Car? award for the #1, following its first-place finish in the Best Small SUV category of the What Car? EV Awards in August, the win reflects the continued appeal of the smart’s class-leading performance and safety, despite the emergence of multiple rivals since.

Established in 1978, the What Car? Awards are among the most esteemed accolades in the industry, celebrating outstanding achievements and innovations from across the automotive spectrum.

We are thrilled to receive this significant What Car? Award, which recognizes smart’s commitment to delivering outstanding products in the electric vehicle sector. With the imminent arrival of the even more affordable #1 Pro in the UK, and the upcoming launch of our exceptionally well-received #3, we are confident that smart will continue to set new standards for practicality, design, and value in 2024.

Dirk Adelmann, CEO for smart Europe

It's as good to drive as it is safe, and has an interior that's both classy and practical. You also get loads of equipment for your money, despite pricing being highly competitive. And like all of the best electric cars, it combines a good range with fast charging.
