October 12, 2026, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany. smart introduces the all-new smart #21 as the contemporary reinvention of its iconic two-seater. Thirty years after the original smart two-seater concept was unveiled in Paris, the fully electric smart #2 reaffirms the idea of a modern mobility solution, particularly for urban environments. It combines the brand's signature compact dimensions with forward-looking EV technology.
The introduction of the smart #2 marks the beginning of a new era of the characteristic two-seater, reshaped for the demanding mobility needs in today's cities in Europe and worldwide. Measuring 2,746 mm in length2, the new smart two-seater retains the wheels-at-the-corners stance that has defined the model since its first generation, maximising interior space within an ultra-compact footprint. With a turning circle of 6.95 metres curb-to-curb, the smart #2 makes navigating tight city streets and parking in narrow spaces effortless.
The spacious and practical interior with clever solutions for everyday mobility, the two-tone body colour and iconic Split Tailgate are more than just stylish details. These exemplary vehicle features made the original smart fortwo instantly recognisable and have now been carried forward into the smart #2 in their most up-to-date versions.
For me, the smart #2 is much more than a new addition to our portfolio. It marks the return of a true automotive icon, reimagined for the cities of today. It builds on everything that made the smart fortwo unique, while taking its original idea into a new era. Technology has moved forward, cities have changed, and the need for clever urban mobility is more relevant than ever. There is no doubt: the time is right for the next chapter of the smart two-seater.Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of smart Europe GmbH
At the core of the smart #2 is the newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform, engineered specifically for the new smart two-seater. The power comes from a rear-mounted 60 kW electric motor that delivers 130 Nm of torque to the rear wheels. Wider tyres at the back than at the front further enhance stability and dynamics. The battery itself is a 35.8 kWh LFP unit, delivering up to 290 km of combined range (WLTP; target value)3 and supporting 65 kW DC fast charging, taking it from 10% to 80% state of charge within 20 minutes4.
The smart #2 also offers AC charging up to 11 kW, keeping it ready for daily city life without compromise. Vehicle-to-load (V2L)5 capability further extends its usability beyond the road. The five-link rear suspension of the new smart #2, a first in its class, supports confident and composed driving in urban areas and on the highway. Combined with the low centre of gravity of the floor-mounted battery, this advanced suspension architecture enables a direct steering geometry, delivering both sportier handling and greater comfort.
Getting the balance right in a car this compact meant tuning every detail, from chassis hard points and steering ratio to the right tyre compound for both city streets and open highways. We tested the smart #2 on proving grounds, in wind tunnels, and on public roads across different climates, because confidence behind the wheel must hold up in the real world, not just on paper.Dr. Tilo Schweers, Vice President R&D Europe of smart Europe GmbH
The smart #2's body structure is defined by the Tridion Cell Evo, the next generation of the safety cell that has characterized smart since its very first model. It wraps a robust structure around the cabin without adding to the vehicle’s compact dimensions. Beyond structural safety, the smart #2 comes equipped with driver assistance systems as standard, including smart Pilot Assist6 and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go and Highway Assist.
For the European markets, the smart #2 will start with three core trim lines – Pure, Pure+, and Premium – alongside a limited Couture Edition. The interior of all variants combines a continuous bench-style seats arrangement, an S-shaped cockpit, intuitive operation modes and a clearly structured, open cabin. A 10.1" central screen paired with an 8.8" driver display enables 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, backed by an eight-year Connectivity Package that keeps the smart #2 continuously linked to its connected vehicle services. A standout detail is the smart Pillar in the dashboard, where small gadgets can be mounted for quick access on the go.
smart #2 Pure is the confident starting point into the range combining essential features with a comprehensive equipment package for urban mobility. V2L allows the smart #2 to power compatible external electrical devices. Driver assistance features include smart Pilot Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go and Highway Assist. LED headlamps and taillights with automatic high beam round out a package built for both city and highway driving.
smart #2 Pure+ builds on the foundation of the smart #2 Pure with 11 kW AC charging and a heated driver seat. Just like in the smart #2 Pure, the comprehensive ADAS package including Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Mitigation, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard.
smart #2 Premium adds features like a glass roof, heated man-made leather seats for the driver and passenger and the dedicated 7-speaker Sennheiser Sound System. Additional colour combinations offer further configuration options — including two-tone body colour finishes — paired with matching interior selections.
smart #2 Couture Edition is limited to 999 units in Europe. It features an Atelier White Matte exterior paint with a Platinum Gold roof, complemented by 16" Lyra rims with gold details. It comes with the full Premium specification as standard, including the glass roof, ambient lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, Sennheiser sound, wireless charging, and navigation, combined with a numbered interior badge and a look and feel entirely its own.
1Note on the smart #2’s vehicle status: The vehicle is currently still undergoing the homologation process (type approval process). The technical specifications, equipment features, and functions listed are based on the current state of development and are subject to change during the homologation process. Delivery will take place once homologation is complete. Upon delivery, the vehicle will correspond to the production specification confirmed by homologation.
2This applies to the smart #2 Pure, smart #2 Pure+, and smart #2 Premium models. The smart #2 Couture Edition is 2,764 mm long.
3Energy consumption combined in kWh/100 km (WLTP): 13.6 (Pure / Pure+ / Premium / Couture Edition); CO₂ emissions combined (while the car is in operation) in g/km: 0; CO₂ class: A; electric range (WLTP) in km: 290 (Pure / Pure+ / Premium / Couture Edition). These are preliminary details. The vehicle is currently undergoing the EU homologation process. These details are subject to final homologation. Changes are therefore possible. Once the EU homologation process is complete, smart will publish the official figures through the usual channels.
4The charging time of the battery may vary depending on various conditions such as different ambient and battery temperatures, available power and other restrictions (e.g. local legal regulations, technical standards, unbalanced load limits), as well as the use of the remote control function (e.g. remote controlled air conditioning, preheating of the vehicle, etc.). With a 3-phase power supply, you can charge at up to 11 kW and go from 10% to 80% SOC (State of Charge) in just 3 hours under optimal conditions (except with the for smart #2 Pure, which is are only available with 7.4 kW a single-phase onboard charger that technically allows for a maximum charging power of 7.4 kW and requires 5 hours to do so). With a DC fast charging station, you can even charge at up to 65kW and go from 10% to 80% SOC in 20 minutes under optimal conditions.
5V2L requires special accessory (sold separately). The functionality is only available in type F socket. Hence, in some countries the use may not be possible or restricted as the compatibility may not meet the local standard for external devices.
6All smart driver assistance and safety systems are aids and do not release the user from his responsibility as a driver. Observe the information in the operating instructions and the system limits described there.
