(June 22, 2026, Hangzhou, China) – Following its highly acclaimed global debut in Beijing this April, smart, the contemporary premium intelligent EV brand, has brought the visionary smart Concept #2 to Rome for its exclusive European premiere, offering new perspectives on the interior design philosophy and creation process as well as technical details on the ECA platform of the upcoming smart #2. Against the stunning backdrop of Rome’s historic narrow streets, the brand is showcasing the reinvention of its iconic fortwo.
The smart Concept #2 marks the return of this legendary urban masterpiece and will pen an exciting new chapter in the reinvention of the iconic model. Rooted firmly in smart D.N.A., this two-seater stands as the true halo of the smart lineup. As the classic fortwo has always enjoyed immense popularity across Europe, we invite you all to stay tuned for the #2 world premiere at the Paris Motor Show this October.Mr. Kang Yi, Global CMO of smart
The smart Concept #2 brings the design direction of the upcoming smart #2 to life. Its proportions, two-tone color concept, frameless doors and precisely resolved surface details all reflect one guiding principle: Function becomes Fashion. Functional decisions become design identity. The car's character comes from what it does well, not from decoration applied on top.
Central elements of the interior concept of the upcoming smart #2 include a continuous bench seat, a cockpit design with an S-shape principle as well as a consistently efficient use of space. The focus is on an open, clearly structured cabin that creates generous roominess and an elevated feel from compact exterior dimensions.
Styled by the Mercedes-Benz global design team, the interior follows the idea that urban mobility must not only be efficient, but also pleasant, accessible, and thoughtfully crafted in every detail. The continuous bench seat is therefore more than a design element: it dissolves the conventional divide between driver and passenger and creates a sense of shared space and practicality - generous, open, and inviting, even within an ultra-compact footprint.
The open cabin architecture concept creates a deliberately minimalist yet inviting atmosphere. The S-shaped cockpit is designed for intuitive operation, clear orientation, maximum space efficiency and well-balanced safety. Together, these elements underline how intelligent design solutions transform compactness from constraint into quality—where every decision serves both function and form.
Engineers and product experts from smart presented more technical details of its scalable ECA (Electric Compact Architecture) platform for the first time. Developed by the international smart engineering departments specifically for an ultra-compact all-electric vehicle, the platform forms the technical foundation for the upcoming smart #2 and demonstrates how intelligent use of space, urban agility, safety and electric everyday usability can be brought together in a vehicle of this size.
In the smart #2, the ECA platform will enable a tight 6.95-meter turning diameter, which equals the agility of the last-generation smart two-seater. This addresses one of the key challenges of urban mobility: maximum manoeuvrability in confined spaces. At the same time, the architecture is designed to make consistent use of the available interior space. Short overhangs, compact technical packaging and a clear focus on the all-electric drivetrain create the foundation for the open interior concept.
The ECA platform is engineered in a way that underlines the ambition of the upcoming smart #2 as a fully capable electric vehicle with a targeted 35.7 kWh[1] battery, an electric range of nearly 300 kilometers (WLTP)[2], and DC fast charging that goes from 10% to 80% SOC within 20 minutes[3]. The platform is therefore not conceived as a purely urban solution, but as the technical basis for a compact vehicle that combines urban mobility with the flexibility modern drivers demand.
Another core area of the ECA platform is the safety architecture of the upcoming smart #2. With the principles of the known tridion cell, smart is further developing a central element of its safety philosophy and transferring it to the next generation of its ultra-compact all-electric two-seater. The aim is to combine compact exterior dimensions with a robust structure and modern safety requirements. The new version of the tridion cell represents the ambition of the brand to make safety the core priority independent of vehicle size. The upcoming smart #2 will show that a compact vehicle can do more than save space: it can also provide protection, stability, and confidence.
