smart Proves Global Growth Strategy With Unique Product and Brand Updates in Beijing

  • At the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, smart unveiled the smart Concept #5, the brand's most versatile and spacious vehicle to date

April 25, 2024, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany. From April 25 to May 4, smart presents the new Concept #51 as a world premiere at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2024. The unique concept vehicle marks the entry of the brand into the premium mid-size all-electric SUV segment and was first shown to international automotive experts in public alongside the established smart #1 and smart #3 at the opening day of the renowned automotive exhibition.

During the official press conference on April 25, smart also announced the renewal of its brand claim “open your mind.” With this statement, the company underlines its attitude of openness to new perspectives and opportunities. To further support diversity of thought, culture, and beliefs on a global scale, smart aims to serve as a platform for collaboration and creative inspiration. This builds on the brand's efforts to break with convention, constantly seeking the best solutions for urban mobility and beyond. 

Since 2019, the brand has increased its global presence with business operations based on the “China-Europe Dual-Home” strategy in 23 countries and regions in Europe, Greater China, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. With its all-electric product portfolio, smart plans to continue its expansion into new markets in the course of 2024, including Australia, New Zealand, and South America.

This extraordinary vehicle concept represents a consistent and decisive evolutionary step for the premium brand.

Cutting-edge technology and design 

The world premiere of the smart Concept #5 marks the industry debut of several leading technologies and design features. The all-electric SUV concept vehicle is equipped with a portable Hi-Fi speaker, featuring six sound units designed to cater to a variety of use scenarios – whether the music is enjoyed in the vehicle, outdoors, or at home. The portable speaker can be combined with the built-in video projector in the vehicle’s front to transform any outdoor environment into a movie theater that can be operated from the dashboard. The industry’s first cushion airbag, fully integrated into the zero-gravity seat, provides increased comfort and safety for the passenger while driving. 

With the smart brand, we had the courage right from the start to radically rethink and design a completely new, intelligent concept: an ultimate city car. But times have changed, and the brand and its products have evolved. With our smart Concept #5 we achieve the unexpected – form and function in a perfect combination. The concept car is a statement, a car for the brave off-road adventurers, the next level in the off-road segment.

Visionary solutions for an enhanced all-electric driving experience 

In this vehicle, the smart Pilot Assist 3.0 is presented for the first time. This advanced system uses a LiDAR technology solution powered by the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip (SoC) to enable city navigation on smart pilot for a safer, smarter, and more efficient travel experience. The smart Concept #5 is equipped with the powerful AMD V2000 chip, which provides a responsive and visually stunning digital interface, while cutting-edge generative Artificial Intelligence technology allows passengers to intuitively communicate with the smart assistant in the vehicle. The smart Concept #5 also reaches new levels of electric driving performance in terms of charging speed and range: thanks to 800-volt technology with 4C superfast charging capability, the smart Concept #5 can recharge up to 70% State of Charge (SoC) (10-80%) of its battery capacity within 15 minutes and offers a locally emission-free range of over 550 kilometers2. The world premiere of the smart #5 series production model is planned for the second half of 2024. Launch dates for European markets will be disclosed at a later stage.
