December 6, 2023, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany. Following the five-star safety rating of the smart #1 by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) crash test, the new SUV coupé, the smart #3, has now also received a five-star safety rating. With this Euro NCAP safety rating in accordance with the new 2023 regulations, the smart #3 is the front-runner in its class.
In the crucial safety assessments in the areas of Adult Occupant (90%), Child Occupant (86%), Vulnerable Road Users (84%) and Safety Assist (85%), the smart #3 achieved impressive scores, exceeding the stringent European five-star requirements. Therewith, the smart #3 had the highest score for Safety Assist of all models tested in 2023 and the highest score for Adult Occupant in its category. With this, the smart #3 meets the highest quality standards setting benchmarks worldwide.
Robust housing made of high-strength steel for maximum safety
Compared to previous years, the new Euro NCAP 2023 standard provides for stringent tests in which not only the protection provided by the vehicle's safety systems is assessed, but also an even higher standard for the damage to other vehicles. The smart #3 performed well in both frontal impacts with a progressive movable barrier and side impacts with a rigid pillar.
The entire body structure was designed and developed to meet highest safety standards, consisting of 19% of thermoformed steel and 74% of high-strength steel. This creates a strong safety environment for its users and greatly increases the torsional rigidity, allowing it to effectively resist external impacts and ensuring occupant safety while minimizing damage to other vehicles.
Battery safety is the main concern of every electric automobile user. smart’s batteries employ non-thermal-propagation (NTP) technology to prevent and control non-thermal propagation. This ensures increased battery safety through multiple protective measures, including 360° prevention, automatic warning, active cooling, passive thermal insulation, fast exhaust and an intelligent cut-off.
Active safety protection: Safeguarding every journey
Thanks to its modern software environment, the smart #3 is an intelligent companion in everyday life and supports the driver with an intuitive ecosystem for driving. This includes various systems as part of the smart Pilot Assist, such as a highway assistant (HWA), Active Lane Change Assist (ALCA) and Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The smart #3 stands out in the safety assistant test thanks to its active anticipation performance, achieving the highest score of all models evaluated for 2023.
Equipped with a range of active safety technologies that boast superior detection and reaction capabilities, the smart #3's AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) system scored full marks in Euro NCAP's typical urban traffic scenarios, such as crossing bicycles and motorcycles, ensuring a safety-focused drive.
